The Landlady – Roald Dahl

Billy cautiously looked at the lady realising how odd all of this seemed. “I am very tired, I must be off to bed now”.

He stood up and swiftly left the room before the lady could stop him. He felt her eyes bore into his back in protest. He went into his room and closed the door hoping he was just overthinking things. Billy all of a sudden felt very, overwhelmingly tired. He didn’t know how long he had been asleep but as he slowly became conscious he opened his eyes. What he saw made him fill with panic and adrenaline. The lady was standing over Billy with a knife pointed at him and a smile on her face.

“Dear, I didn’t expect you to be awake so soon”

Billy squirmed at those words ‘luckily I was’ he thought to himself. All of a sudden Billy remembered that a few years ago his parents had forced him into self defence classes. Maybe those classes will be useful after all. He quickly, yet smoothly flung around and knocked the lady in the back of her legs causing her to fly to the ground. In the process the lady had lost grip of the knife. Billy hurriedly swept up the knife, gathered his bag and ran from the house. The lady ran after him shouting that he couldn’t just leave like that. Billy didn’t stop running until he arrived at the Bell and Dragon.
